About Us

Hi there— We’re Groovy Tuesdays!

From the brains of professional West Coast Swing dancer and instructor Austin Kois along with Ken Padron and Starlite Ballroom, we became Groovy Tuesdays: a hub for San Jose California’s West Coast Swing community to come dance, relax, and have fun every Tuesday night.

Groovy Tuesdays offers something for everyone who loves West Coast Swing: A weekly drop-in intermediate class to help people expand their dance vocabulary, a drop-in beginner class for anyone to learn their first steps for West Coast Swing, and hours of social dancing for everyone to get together and move to music they love in a way that makes them happy.

Groovy Tuesdays isn’t just about becoming great dancers, it’s about having a great time dancing.

FAQ’s

Got questions? We’ve probably got answers.

We know that getting started dancing for the first time can be scary, so if you have any other questions that would help your first time be easier for you, please don’t hesitate to reach out and ask!

  • West Coast Swing is a partner dance with roots in the Lindy Hop. It is characterized by a smooth and elastic look due to its use of extension and compression movements to create action.

The dance lets both partners improvise steps and movements while dancing together that aren’t exact patterns or figures. This improvisational element is what is such a draw for the people who love this dance.

  • If you don't have a partner that's no problem! We rotate partners during our classes and social dancing so you get to meet new people and have fun even while flying solo.

If you do have a partner and want to stay together for class, that's also great! Just make sure to let the teacher know if you want to stick together or not.

  • It's best to dance in shoes that have a little bit of slip so you don't hurt your knees. Anything with a suede or leather bottom is ideal, but you can make do with any non-marking shoe as long as they feel comfortable on your feet and are easy to move in.

  • There is no need to pre-register for our classes! You can show up and register right before class and get to dancing in no time.

  • West Coast Swing has two roles, Leaders and Followers.

    • Leaders set up shapes and patterns and maintain timing for the partnership while dancing to the music.

    • Followers respond to the shapes and patterns the leader creates and add styling and flair to those base shapes.

You can dance whichever role seems most interesting to you, or you can learn both and have fun dancing West Coast Swing both ways!
